Penetration: Tung oil can be used as a waterproof wood sealer. It penetrates like an oil and then dries to a durable solid that is resistant to water, alcohol, and oils. Unlike other finishes that form a film on the wood's surface, tung oil penetrates deep into the wood fibers, cures to a flexible non-oily solid, and becomes part of the wood itself.

Application: Tung oil can be applied with a cloth, brush, or any applicator suitable for "oil-based" paint. A squeegee is a nice option for large flat surfaces, and an absorbent cloth is usually best for removing excess from the surface. On many projects, it may be helpful to buff with a mild abrasive pad between applications to help with penetration and enhance smoothness.

Drying Time: Tung oil dries relatively slowly as it reacts with oxygen in the air to cure. A warm, dry, and well-ventilated environment is best. Tung oil is fully cured when it no longer feels oily and its nutty aroma is no longer present.
